What is laryngitis?

Laryngitis - an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the larynx and vocal cords. This inflammation and swelling of the vocal cords causes the voice is hoarse, or may temporarily disappear.

Causes of laryngitis

Laryngitis is most often associated with the following factors:

Other viral or bacterial infection
Pneumonia (inflammation of the lungs)
Allergic reaction
Chemical irritation
Damage to the larynx

Additional risk factors include dusty environments, hot, dry air, over-voting, the presence of foci of chronic inflammation in the nose and throat, impaired nasal breathing.

The symptoms of laryngitis

In acute laryngitis is often (but not necessarily) observed deterioration of general condition, often fever. Can be felt pain when swallowing. Sometimes there is difficulty in breathing (which is explained by the narrowing of the glottis due to its spasm and edema. In acute laryngitis is usually a feeling of dryness, tickling, scratching in the throat, dry cough at first, and later accompanied by expectoration of sputum, the voice becomes hoarse, rough or very silent.

The disease usually lasts about a week, but the constant abuse voice mode and incorrect treatment can become chronic.

The chronic form develops most often in the background often repetitive and not dolechennyh acute illness, chronic foci of airway inflammation, allergic disorders, as well as occupational hazards (chemical irritants, dust, over-voltage voice, etc.).

How to treat laryngitis?

Treatment of acute laryngitis is primarily in the elimination of the causes of the disease (mostly flu or the common cold). For a complete rest of the larynx in 5 days is not recommended to talk to the patient, if necessary, to speak in a low whisper. This is very important because Overvoltage vocal cords can become chronic laryngitis. Also recommended for acute laryngitis plenty of warm drinks (very useful warm milk with honey, which soothes and coats the inflamed ligaments), gargling, warm inhalation, hot compress on the neck. Necessary at times to prevent food from spicy seasonings, spices (because they irritate the throat). At the time of illness and for at least a week after recovery prohibits smoking. Physician may be appointed as and medications (anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-bacterial agents, drugs that remove tissue edema (including antihistamines).

Prevention of laryngitis is primarily the prevention of colds. Wash your hands with soap and water, use disposable wipes, do not touch your nose and mouth with unwashed hands, avoid close contact with patients with SARS. Was Tempered (douche, cool off, dousing with cold water), get enough sleep, spend time outdoors even in autumn and winter.

Be careful not to hypothermia, try to keep your vocal chords in the heat (do not talk in the cold, wearing a warm scarf and hat).

It is desirable that in the house there is very little dust, and the air was not too hot and moist enough.

If you are forced by the nature of contact with harmful substances, inhalation after work do to remove particulate matter from the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract.
